Tips For Keeping Your Car Pollen Free!

Apr 12, 2021

There’s no mistaking that spring is here, as flowers are in bloom all around San Antonio. With all those beautiful blossoms, we can also expect plenty of pollen, and it doesn’t take long for your car to be coated in yellow. If your car has just received a fresh coat, consider this advice for keeping it clean.

Pollen and Paint

Pollen doesn’t just cause trouble for your sinuses and coat your car with a sheet of yellow – it can actually harm your paint job if you leave it too long. Pollen particles are highly acidic, and they can wear and even rust the paint through accelerated oxidation. Unfortunately, water on its own only speeds up the oxidation process, so even a hearty rain might not be enough to protect your paint job from the seasonal nuisance.

Pollen Protection

While you might have the option to park your car in a garage or carefully place a car cover on it in the driveway, neither of those short-term solutions still hold once you shift into drive. As long as you get out and drive, your car is bound to collect some pollen each year. There’s no way around it, so the next best thing you can do is protect your car with a sealant to guard the paint against those acidic airborne granules. Consider coating your car with a synthetic sealant or wax, and remember to replenish the protection with a fresh coat as needed. Keeping the car coated with sealant should also make it easier to clean.

Careful Cleaning

Once you’re ready to clear off that unappealing pollen accumulation, the first thing you’ll need to do is park in a shady spot. Doing so will help keep your cleaning products from evaporating too quickly in the direct heat. Wash the car down with plenty of water, then follow with a detail spray and wipe down with a microfiber towel. These towels are ideal for this task due to their particle-grabbing ability and paint-friendly softness.  You might need several towels to get the job done, as you shouldn’t keep using a towel after its gotten too dirty.
