Understanding Curb Rash in San Antonio, TX

Understanding Curb Rash

What is Curb Rash?

Curb rash happens when your wheels come in contact with an object like a curb, deep pothole, etc. This leaves your wheels with abrasions and scratches that are unseemly and can lead to bigger issues depending on the level of damage. For one, it makes your wheels look scuffed and worn, which doesn’t look nice to you or potential future buyers when it comes time to resell. Luckily, there are ways to repair curb rash and renew the strength and beauty of your rims. Let’s go through some of the steps you can take to buff out your wheels at home. If the job is serious enough, you can trust the team here at Red McCombs Superior Body Shop to set you straight.

DIY: How To Repair Curb Rash

If your curb rash is minor enough, you can easily repair it at home. First, you’ll want to collect a few items: a rim cleaning solution, sandpaper in a few different grits, a rubber mallet, clear coat paint, a microfiber towel, and a rim protector.

  1. Clean the area using the rim cleaning solution.
  2. Sand down the affected area. Start with the coarser grit and move to the finer grit to smooth out the damaged area.
  3. Straighten the bent rim with the rubber mallet. Be gentle, as aluminum rims crack easily.
  4. Apply touch-up paint to any exposed metal. You can color match the paint if desired and then cover it with clear coat paint as well. You can also just use the clear coat paint.
  5. Add a rim protector as a barrier between your wheel and any future curbs or other objects.
