Tips To Know When To Change Your Air Filter

Jul 4, 2022

Clean air is essential for your engine’s performance, so it’s important to keep things running smoothly by changing the air filter when necessary.

When Should an Engine Air Filter be Replaced?

Given the right conditions, an air filter can last for tens of thousands of miles. However, there are a variety of factors that can impact the longevity of your vehicle’s air filter. If you’re cruising through particularly polluted air, that can wear out your engine’s filter faster than intended. High temperatures like we experience here in Texas can also impact how well your engine air filter will perform over time. If you’re not sure how often your vehicle should have its air filter replaced, take a look in your owner’s manual. If you want to have a look for yourself, inspect the air filter for dirt, stains, or other contaminants.

Prepare for the Job

Changing an air filter is among the easier maintenance tasks for most vehicles, and it can be done in just a few minutes as long as you have the right tools. If you want to do it yourself, check your toolbox for pliers and a screwdriver. You might also need a socket set depending on the particular model you’re working with. Of course, you’ll also need to have the replacement air filter ready as well.

Changing the Air Filter

First, lift up the hood. The air filter should be housed near or even on the engine, so look for a plastic case with a large hose running from it. The case might be secured with screws, wing nuts, or other means, but some filter housings can be removed by hand. When the top is off, take out the old filter and clear out the inside of the case with a clean rag. When you put the new filter in, remember to lower it in with the rubber rim-side up. Make sure it fits securely, then close up the housing.
