In a perfect world, the only component of a vehicle that touches the ground is the tires. As such, tires have a direct impact on the performance of a vehicle from handling, braking, and how smooth it rides. So, it will come as no surprise that maintaining your tires is of the utmost importance. There are several ways to service your tires: Tire rotation, tire balancing, and wheel alignment, all of which are used to increase the life of your tires and avoid potential accidents and blowouts.Yet, before you are forced to take you car into a service center take some time out of your day and follow these tips to keep your tires in tiptop shape.
Check Your Tire Pressure Each Month
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the leading cause of tire-related crashes is underinflated tires. Underinflated tires cause premature wear, decrease vehicle handling and gas mileage, and could lead to an unfortunate blowout. Make sure you regularly check your tire pressure. Do not wait until you take your car in to check the pressure. The more you do it, the better.
Rotate
You need to rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles to maintain even tread wear.
Avoid Mismatched Tires
Though it might seem logical to just replace the one tire that keeps on deflating, it is not a wise decision. Mismatched tires will negatively effect your vehicle’s handling and cause your other tires to have unnecessary wear and tear. If you do need a new tire, simply purchase two and place them at the rear, which will give you better handling during wet weather. The cost of purchasing two tires over one far outweighs the potential cost of fixing the damage to a wrecked vehicle or replacing an entire set of tires.
