Why You Should Avoid Potholes While Driving

Why You Should Avoid Potholes

Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of the groundwater after the water has penetrated the ground under the pavement. When the water freezes, it expands. They vary in shape and size, but they can still do damage no matter the size. Here are a few reasons why you should avoid them when you’re out:

Tires and Wheels

Potholes normally have rough edges that can compress the tires. In severe impacts, the rim can get bent or the metal can crack, leading to air loss or a blowout. If the impact with the pothole is done with significant force, it could also cause misalignment of the wheels, throwing off the balance of the steering and suspension systems.

Undercarriage

Cars that are lower to the ground risk damage to the low-hanging bumpers and sidings when they encounter potholes. This can be a costly repair, even if it’s mostly cosmetic.

Exhaust Pipes

The exhaust pipes are one of the parts of a vehicle closest to the ground. Potholes love your exhaust system as they can easily scrape and puncture the pipes, causing lots of noise and loss of power. This type of damage needs to be addressed ASAP.

How to Avoid Potholes

A pothole can sometimes sneak up on you when you round a curve or there’s too much traffic. However, if you can avoid them, you should, but only in a safe way. If you can see one coming up, the best thing to do is slow the vehicle down and make sure it’s safe to go around. Always use your mirrors and check the blind spot before going for the maneuver. You should also make sure the tires on your vehicle are properly inflated.
